Back around 1982, a friend convinced her mother to teach me to crochet.  The first thing I learned was the granny square and I made a beautiful wool blanket for my bedroom.  The granny square is a fast way to learn various crochet stitches.  When I was a child I would watch my mother knit argyle socks.  She taught me the basics of knitting which came in handy when I took lessons about a decade ago.  I found getting the tension down in both crocheting and knitting to be the most difficult but once that is mastered the rest is a piece of cake.  With either crochet or knit you can do simple patterns or very difficult.  It doesn’t matter because knitting a scarf, for example, can be so easy and when given as a gift so appreciated because it was handmade!

The photos here represent some of the felted bowls I’ve done over the past few years.  There is a crocheted lariat that is done with a chain stitch and then beads and charms are sewn in afterwards.  Fast to whip up and it makes a great gift!

Knitting or crocheting is a great hobby you can take anywhere.  You can even take your needles on board airplanes again.  When your family and friends have enough of your blankets, scarves and hats you can donate them to charities across the world.

Some of the other crafts I enjoy are mosaics, painted floorcloths, and fusing dichroic glass.
